Brexit Deal

Scotland and the Irish Exception

AVOIDING alarmist language when discussing Brexit becomes almost impossible when the most sensible of commenters, men like Professor Anthony Seldon – an eminent historian and Vice Chancellor of Birmingham University – and respected documentary maker Michael Cockerell, are speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme, the most sensible of current affairs programmes, opining on the likelihood of rioting in the streets if things continue as they are. Brexit is not going well. Anxiety over the consequences of a no-deal hard Brexit is palpable, with more people than not imagining – rightly or wrongly – that a worst-case scenario will see soldiers on the street. People are afraid. In households all over the United Kingdom food and essential medicines are being stockpiled. Whether or not the worst will come to pass, the social tensions are rising to boiling point and few – at least on the Remain side – trust theresa May’s government can pull this of.
