An iscot Short Story

To build the car park alone, they had to rip up woods, level small hills, infill a canal and demolish three villages

Can ye no find yer car, mister?’

The wee boy trailed behind his mother, a small, anxious woman pushing a crammed shopping trolley. The woman glanced back at Lawson, and pulled the boy closer to her. Lawson saw her whisper to the boy, something about not speaking to strangers. They scuttled off: the woman did not relax until her car door was safely locked.

Lawson smiled wryly. The boy was right: he couldn’t find his car. He had paid a brief visit to the Glen Mammon Trading Centre, with its shopping malls, leisure centres, DIY stores and cinemas. Now he stood before a glittering, multicoloured mosaic of metal: Scotland’s largest car park. It was nearly full. Somewhere out there was the modest second-hand Fiesta he had bought the week before.
