THE CUTHBERTS are a package deal. Like love and marriage, or a horse and carriage, you don’t get one without the other. Margaret and Jim Cuthbert, the resolutely independent economists whose work skewered the Tories and New Labour over their love-in with the Private Finance Initiative, have not been shy of criticising the SNP Government over the last decade.

Jim, who at one time worked for the Treasury, described – in an article penned jointly with Margaret for Open Democracy – their Options for Scotland paper during the independence referendum campaign, which purported to outline a “union dividend”, as demonstrating that: “The once proud Treasury has become a thoroughly politicised organisation, and one where technical standards have badly slipped.”
