Malcolm Chisholm

Man o independent mind

WITH FIRST MINISTER Nicola Sturgeon having launched a fresh conversation with Scottish voters to persuade them of the merits of independence, she could do worse than direct her efforts at one veteran politician from Labour’s ranks, Malcolm Chisholm.

Let’s call this Project Malcolm X. The former Westminster and Holyrood Minister sits squarely in the target zone marked “unconvinced but persuadable” should it come to IndyRef 2.

Chisholm stood down in May at the age of 67 having represented Leith as MSP since 1999 and before that MP since 1992. He voted No in the 2014 referendum and says he would still vote No now, but his stance has softened. He believes the political argument for independence has been won, but he still remains to be convinced about the economic case.

“The political arguments for independence have got stronger,” he concedes. “Attachment to Great Britain has weakened greatly since 1979. The problem is that the economics have, if anything, got worse. They’re out of sync.
