Raised beds are a popular way to grow vegetables, even though they require an initial outlay. However, if you are a new gardener and you struggle with time, a raised bed is going to be helpful to you. They can of course cut down the growing area because between the raised beds you have paths and, combined with the sides of the bed and a decent walkway, you Find this will reduce the growing space. However, if you are starting out on this growing journey, sometimes smaller areas are better to work with first; they are less overwhelming so can give you confidence. Also, the pathways can be covered with gravel or woodchip, helping to keep the area tidy and weed free, a boon if you don’t have a lot of time. Another great advantage is the height. You can have them as high as you feel is necessary and this is a great advantage to those who may have mobility issues. On the other hand, if you are okay bending, a raised bed can be as low as 15cm (6in). hey are more of a trip hazard at this height but they still mark out and contain the growing area neatly and help in maintenance. At this height they are going to be a lot cheaper too.
