Choose the right varieties and you can be picking raspberries from mid-June to the end of September and because they can be frozen or turned into delicious jams and preserves, you can enjoy the fruit virtually all year round. So what do they need to make them thrive?
START FROM THE TOP
When it comes to buying plants you need to choose wisely and select top quality, virus-free stock from a reputable nursery or fruit specialist. Glance through the catalogues of any fruit specialist or seed and young plant supplier and you should be provided with a good choice of modern varieties. For some of our favourites see page 34.
BE PREPARED
Before your plants arrive, prepare the ground and all-important supports. The best site for raspberries is somewhere in sunshine (they will tolerate semi-shade), with some shelter from strong winds and in well drained, reasonably fertile soil. Remove perennial weeds and add plenty of well-rotted garden compost or manure prior to planting. Dig it in well and break up any hard layers at the same time.
