STRESS-BUSTING BREWS

Relaxing with a soothing cuppa is a great way to unwind and making one is a good excuse to take time out from the digging. But some herbal teas can offer additional benefits, says KG editor, Steve Ott

FENNEL SEEDS (Foeniculum vulgare)

The herb fennel is easy to grow and will often self-seed around the garden. It is a perennial, so once planted will come up each year and is much-loved by bees and hoverflies.

Give it a sunny, warm spot in impoverished soil and it will thrive with very little care and attention and is very drought tolerant. All parts are edible and can be used in an infusion, but it is the seeds that are mostly used.

Collect the seeds once the flowerheads are ripe by snipping off the heads and placing them upside down in a paper bag. Once dry they can be stored in a glass jar.

USES

Fennel seed tea (the seeds can be used crushed or whole) is said to be great for the digestion and for heartburn, bloating and flatulence, but with its gentle aniseed flavour it is just a pleasant tea to relax with after a meal.
