There aren’t many makers in the knife industry who are quite the household name as Ken Onion. Onion’s knife designs have greatly influenced Kershaw Knives and Columbia River Knife and Tool, both of which have constructed a staggering number of knives that are direct results of Ken Onion’s extensive work.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ken, his son, and a few other knifemakers on a trip to Hawaii. My wife had business to do there, so I was left to my own devices for several days. Hiking was at the top of my list, but I decided to reach out to Ken on a whim. He invited me over to his shop to talk and capture some photos. It was a pleasure to observe the inner workings of his shop, and to learn about how his son, Kenny, is joining Ken in the family business.
