“LOAN WORD”

THIS MONTH’S WORD OF THE MONTH IS “LOAN WORD”. [FOR MORE INFORMATION ON LOAN WORDS, PLEASE SEE DR FINGERS’ VOCABULARY CLINIC]

Our monthly look at interesting words and expressions.

WORD OF THE MONTH

“Loan words” are terms and expressions that have been “borrowed” from other languages. For example, terms such as “internet, football, rock ‘n’ roll” and “CD” are all English words that appear in most other languages. But it works the other way too, and English has many loan words which have come from a variety of countries.

English is very “open” to new words. This is because there’s no oicial organisation regulating the language (as there is in countries such as France and Spain). So, English evolves through “usage” - the way that people write and speak language, the verbal habits of the speakers. Many loan words came into English during the time of the British Empire, and in particular from the languages of America, India, Africa, Australia and the Far East. Surprisingly, there are relatively few Celtic words in English, although Scots and Irish have contributed words such as “whiskey”.
