The beach in winter

Wrap up warm and take a stroll with Christine Pybus as she demonstrates how to paint with oils the wide open spaces of the coast in winter

Oils

Coastal Works at Sandsend , oil on board, 5x7in. (14x19cm). Even in the absence of summer crowds, there’s often colour to be found. The works, enhanced by softly painting the background, have a few marks of complementary purples amidst the yellow ‘dinosaurs’ and orange-clad workmen to create an added sparkle and vibrancy.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

■ How to paint a scene with no visible focal points

■ Rapid oil-painting techniques for working outdoors

■ Mixes for sea colours
