A personal approach

Churchyards area great place to begin outdoor painting if you are new to it, as they are quiet places where you may go completely unnoticed. The subject tends to provide many alternative compositions with character, including architecture, foliage and the various stones. Relax and enjoy your painting, whilst soaking up the birdsong and perhaps some sun!

In this article I want to share with you the fundamentals of my overall modus operandi as a painter, and hope it provides useful ideas for aspiring watercolourists.

Every artist is different, but alongside the gradual acquisition of technique, there are usually ideas that maintain motivation and guide artistic growth.

Painting fulfils different roles for different people. For me, I value my subject, which is generally ‘nature’, probably more than the making of art per se, and sometimes think of my painting almost as a byproduct.
