Sketching for pleasure

Part 4 Learn how to add colour to your sketches as Tony Underhill completes his series with a line-and-wash study of a colourful Georgian townhouse

Line and wash

¦ Observe first, draw second

¦ Big shapes then subdivide

¦ Adding colour for extra impact

Ihope you enjoyed using my Georgian town house photo (below left) to produce your own sketch and that some of my drawing and colour tips from earlier in this series proved helpful.

I wanted my sketch to say ‘colourful house in a Georgian terrace’and, as an exercise in sketching for pleasure, to achieve that as simply as possible. The way I cropped the photo from a wider view already helped, but I decided I didn’t need the burglar alarm, pavement plants or basement windows. The brightly painted walls were important, but not precise colour matches, and toning down the right-hand wall would stop it drawing attention away from the white windows on the blue house. Remembering to observe first and draw second, I identified the big shape of the blue house as two similarly sized squares, one above the other, with the top of the bay window about halfway up.
