Part 2 Bill Mundy demonstrates how to paint a portrait in miniature

Miniature painting

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

How to paint a miniature portrait

How to mix skin tones

Practise the stippling technique in watercolour

Following last month’s introduction to miniature painting, its history and the materials and techniques I use, this month I would like to take you through the painting of a portrait. How do I start a miniature portrait? I like to get to know the sitter as much as I can and learn, at least, a little about their character. The subject of the following demonstration is a young lady called Akua, with whom I spent time sketching and taking photographs.

The images in the following demonstration have been displayed larger than actual size to help you see the detail as you work alongside me. This portrait is 31⁄2x3in. (9x7.5cm).

About Leisure Painter

Welcome to the July issue of Leisure Painter, aimed at beginners and amateur painters. Subjects covered this month include landscapes, seascapes, urban scenes, portraits, wild and domesticated animals and birds, flowers and natural still lifes. We introduce a short series on painting buildings in pastel and there are also two new painting projects to try: learn how to simplify a busy harbour scene and paint a portrait of a roe deer. From techniques and colours for painting rain, puddles and reflections in acrylic and painting natural textures in watercolour to drawing exercises and step-by-step demonstrations for you to try, we aim to include something for everyone in each issue.
