Welcome

It is with great pleasure that I present the award-winning work from Leisure Painter’s Open competition and exhibition 2019 (pages 64 to 69), which was held in the Pavilion Gallery at Patchings Art Centre from 11 July to 11 August. We saw an exceptionally interesting array of subject matter this year, and the winning paintings range from beautifully executed landscapes, cityscapes and portraits – animal and human – to depictions of a Moroccan tannery, a truck and a colourful allotment with pumpkins. What they all have in common, however, is a great sense of style, composition and colour. Professional artist, John Sprakes, who is also one of the competition judges, felt that more attention could have been paid to colour in the exhibited works overall and encouraged everyone who enters to paint en plein air as much as possible. As John points out, painting from life helps to increase our understanding of colour and ensures we really look at the subject we’re painting. Observation from life is key here.

You still have time to vote for your favourite painting by visiting the website address you will find at the end of page 69. This is also a great way to see all the work, both exhibited and highly commended, if you didn’t manage to visit Patchings during the exhibition. I have already heard from a few of this year’s entrants, who are planning for next year’s competition!
