Painting project

Part 1 Jem Bowden discusses composition and the effect of light as he introduces this month’s project from two photographs

Observe key aspects of atmosphere and place

Create a composition combining two reference photos

Capture the effects of early morning light

It’s not unusual to find a paintable scene in terms of the subject, but with atmosphere a bit lacking. On a recent two-day trip to Exmouth I happened upon the scene in Photograph A (above) in the afternoon sun, but thought it might be even better with the sun in front rather than behind so I returned the following morning and took Photograph B (above right). The tide was in so I couldn’t stand in precisely the same spot, however, with a bit of artistic licence, we should be able to work from the two photos together, and produce a painting with both atmosphere and a good composition.
