Beginner’s gouache

Part 3 Ready to try something different? Discover the joys of working in gouache on a black support, with Murray Ince

How to transfer drawings onto dark coloured supports

How gouache covers even the darkest of colours

How to dampen and rework areas of colour (wet in wet)

The finished painting The Crooked House of Windsor, gouache on 350gsm black cartridge paper, 12x8in. (30x21cm). Learn how to paint gouache on a black support as you follow Murray’s step-by-step demonstration over the page

The strong opacity of gouache (pronounced gwosh) enables it to cover dark colours, even as dark as a black support. The effect of colour on a black background is striking. Colours appear more vibrant and any subject that has bright colouring will jump out of the background, in fact, even less colourful subjects, such as the building (right) can create impressive paintings.

Due to the large quantity and fineness of the pigments contained in gouache it has extraordinary covering power, as I intend to show in this demonstration.
