’A vigorous sense of community’

John R Hume reflects on the history of the presbyterian churches of Uddingston in Lanarkshire.

SERIES

UDDINGSTON is today largely a dormitory suburb of both Glasgow and the Hamilton area. Historically it was part of the large and prosperous parish of Bothwell, with its massive castle, and was served by Bothwell Parish Church.

From the late 18th century, with the spread of ‘improved farming’, Uddingston became famous for the manufacture of agricultural machinery, especially iron ploughs. By the mid-19th century there were two large implement works in what was becoming a village. Coal mining was also developing to the north of the main street.
