Living Blues  |  Living Blues #239
Living Blues #239 (October/November 2015) features New York-based bluesman Guy Davis on the cover. Davis certainly did not travel the typical path to the blues. The son of actors Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, Guy sees his music as an extension of his ancestry, reflecting the broad African American experience. Louisiana-born, California-based bluesman Henry Clement is a multi-talented showman. His 60-plus year career stretches back to doing studio work for Excello in the 1950s and later fronting his Gumbo Band as one of the most popular blues acts on the West Coast for over 40 years. The Queens, New York, husband and wife duo of Valerie and Benedict Turner, know as Piedmont Bluz, are committed to keeping the East Coast acoustic blues tradition alive. Musician, songwriter, producer and label owner Quinton Claunch has seen it all. At age 93 he looks back at his early days in hillbilly country music and his eventual founding of Memphis-based labels Hi Records and Goldwax Records in this part one of a two-part feature. We wrap things up with an excerpt from Jas Obrecht’s new book on early blues guitarists with his profile of Tampa Red. One of the first stars of blues guitar, and his single string slide work influenced generations to come. The issue also features interviews with Jimmy Johnson and Zac Harman as well as Blues News, reviews and the Living Blues Radio Charts.
