BERLIN, GERMANY
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT Classic schnitzel and chips; Berlin’s Fernsehturm tower rises above the River Spree; beer sampling on the Secret Food Tour; street art on the tour route
A modern fiction has it that John F Kennedy accidentally compared himself to a jam doughnut when giving a landmark speech in the then-divided German capital. His audience would have known that by ‘Berliner’ he meant a citizen and not the similarly named confection, but to outsiders the food culture of Berlin can still be something of a mystery. Secret Food Tours runs an enlightening guided walk around the district of Friedrichshain, where street art has colonised East-Germany-era streetscapes almost as fast as new eateries have. Schnitzel and flammkuchen (a pizza-like cheese, onion and bacon tart) are among more traditional dishes sampled, but currywurst is the true fast-food symbol of the city’s post-war reinvention. Turkish influence has added döner kebabs and filled börek pastries, and – along with a surprise dish – there’s a cheesecake to round things off: apparently Americans got the idea from German immigrants.
