1 COPENHAGEN
Denmark’s capital of cool is unstoppable. New-Nordic Noma has gourmands swooning with its new digs, urban farm and groundbreaking Scandinavian menus. The city’s booming street-food scene is smashing it on Refshaleøen, where a former shipyard is now rebooted as the Reffen food and craft market. The Tivoli Gardens amusement park is beating the winter blues with a new February season, while waste-management centre Amager Bakke has jaws dropping with its rooftop ski slope and hiking trails. The Danish Architecture Centre has moved into Rem Koolhaas’ buzz-inducing cultural centre BLOX, and the anticipated mid-2019 completion of the Cityringen metro line should mean even easier cross-town adventures.
Clean, green and compact, Copenhagen is an enviable urban role model. Bicycles outnumber cars in the inner city, while the bracing, deep-blue harbour is clean enough for a summertime dip. Copper towers and turrets may still dominate the skyline, but this is a city well versed in the cutting edge. Centuries-old palaces, churches and warehouses share streets and waterways with bold contemporary architecture, and the city’s former Meatpacking District hums with galleries, locavore eateries and on-point indie bars. Well-curated museums burst with cultural capital, from Viking bling and royal jewels to Danish industrial design and Scandinavia’s largest collection of Islamic art. Many of these museums are within steps of parks, themselves never short of picnicking locals on summer days. Velkommen to European city living at its most enlightened.
