Taormina, pictured here, lies on the east coast, and was a favourite resort for 20th-century writers including Truman Capote, Jean Cocteau and Halldór Laxness (___________’s only Nobel Prize winner). hough most eyes in Taormina turn towards the sea, views also take in the summit of ___________, Europe’s biggest active volcano. Despite the long-term risk of living on its slopes, the fertile volcanic soils here are a blessing for local farmers. Crops such as lemons and pistachios lavour many a scoop of gelato, and also ___________ (tube-shaped shells of crisp pastry illed with ricotta).
