Get highbrow in Oxford with visits to colleges, galleries and libraries

One of the world’s most famous university towns, Oxford is a wonderful place to ramble and learn, where tranquil college courtyards lie behind narrow cobbled lanes.

Culture in Oxford

The old Bodleian Library complex

The largest of the university’s 38 colleges, Christ Church’s magnifcent buildings, illustrious history and latter-day fame as a location for the Harry Potter flms make it a top draw. Inside the imposing Tom Tower, the Great Tom bell still chimes 101 times every evening at 9.05pm – once the curfew for students (; St Aldate’s; see website for opening times; from £8).

The staircase to Christ Church’s dining hall is a movie favourite
