FROM FOOD TRUCK TO KITCHEN
WORDS: KARYN NOBLE. PHOTOGRAPHS: CHARLIE WHATLEY, CRISTIAN BARNETT/THE BOWLER
Jez Felwick hears a lot of chat in his meatball food truck: ‘Literally every single day I get some banter about my balls.’ Jez’s background in television and branding, and his clever marketing - the truck is called The Bowler ‘because it delivers a good ball’ - means he’s only got himself to blame. His AstroTurf-covered truck is also quite the sight. Yet Jez’s rise to meatball fame has been gradual. He did a course at Ballymaloe Cookery School in Ireland, but it was a visit to LA in 2009 that introduced him to the gourmet food truck scene and planted the germ of an idea, hastened into action by a newsletter from Ballymaloe announcing a course on food trucks. He saw the ‘premiumisation’ of food such as burgers and wanted to be the first to do meatballs. Given that he now has a published cookbook, and Robert Downey Jr among his clientele, his ballsy decision seems to have paid off.
