William Scott’s Ocean (1960) features at Cambridge’s Heong Gallery
See sixties Brit art in Cambridge
The latest addition to Cambridge’s wealth of art museums, the Heong Gallery is a new modern and contemporary art space amid the grand courtyards of Downing College. Set in the college’s former stable block, the gallery sees large canvases hanging in place of saddles and reins, with the inaugural exhibition focusing on British art from the 1950s and ’60s. If you feel the need for an additional dose of 20th-century Brit art while in Cambridge, it’s a very short stroll along cobbled streets and among weaving cyclists to the Fitzwilliam Museum. On the way in, stop to admire Henry Moore’s monumental sculpture Hill Arches, which has just been installed on the front lawn.
