The main transit hub for the Dalmatian coast and, just of it, the popular islands of Hvar, Brac and Vis, Split is oten overlooked as a destination in its own right. But stay longer in the city and you’ll find it hard to resist its colonnaded courtyards and stone-paved streets, lined with buzzy cafés. The deep blue Adriatic Sea and the Dinaric Alps bookend the Old City, where key scenes from the hit series Game of Thrones have been filmed. To wake up here is to be unsure which country you are in, not to mention which century. Hardly surprising, then, that Split is undergoing a boom, with new places opening all the time, and a host of longstanding favourites demanding exploration – from beaches to bars, and galleries to great Mediterranean restaurants.
