MAKING A COMMITMENT

Once you enter a race, it pays to have a bit of structure. If you follow a gradually progressive training plan – seeing distance and speed increases each week – you’ll gain even more than you already do from running. Ticking off training sessions is rewarding, and serves to give your running a renewed sense of purpose. Plus, following a set schedule often makes training easier; you don’t have to think of a run to do, it’s decided for you.

CHALLENGING YOURSELF

One of the biggest myths about races is that everyone’s, well, racing. Really, about 90% of the field will say they’re only racing themselves – and that often means chasing a previously set PB. But when it’s your first time racing a new distance and there’s no PB to beat, you’re winning simply by turning up and giving it a go.

BOOSTING YOUR CONFIDENCE

Remember that buzz the first time you ran for 10 minutes non-stop? You can recapture that feeling every single week when you’re training for a race. As you build up distance or complete an interval session faster, you’ll find you’re a better runner – improving at a quicker rater – than you ever gave yourself credit for.

REDISCOVERING YOUR MOJO

Running without a goal can often see your motivation wane. Training for a race can help you rediscover your mojo. Either opt for a challenge that feels so mind-bogglingly out of reach that you’re scared into training regularly, or just go for a fun event that makes you want to get out of bed and train in the mornings.

RAISING MONEY

Setting yourself a running challenge is a brilliant way to raise money for a cause close to your heart. Every year, millions of pounds are raised by people in races – big and small – across the country, and you’ll be amazed by how much support family, colleagues and even notoriously scrimpy friends are willing to offer.

GETTING AWAY

Attending races usually means going somewhere new, whether that’s a nearby village, to the other end of the country or to sunnier climes. It can mean a new post-run pub, or maybe a new hotel. It can be a fun weekend away for other members of the family, too (although they may need convincing of this).

MAKING FRIENDS

Even the most introverted bloke will struggle to stay silent at a race start: “Bloody cold, isn’t it?” and “What time are you going for?” are two timeless classics. Races are opportunities to meet like-minded folk, and you’ll soon find you weren’t the only one nervous at the start.

MEDALS, T-SHIRTS AND BEER!

The running’s one thing, but let’s not forget the free stuff. At the very least, you’ll get a medal, but some races also offer t-shirts, food and beer tokens, and if all that’s not worth getting out of bed for, we’re not sure what is.

About Men's Running

New to running? The February issue of Men’s Running is tailor-made for you. If, like many, your decision to dust the cobwebs off your trainers was driven by Christmas guilt, then signing up to a race, several months down the line, is an excellent way to keep that new-year motivation running high. And for that, our Ultimate Race Guide is a good place to start. Featuring 100 of the UK’s – and indeed the world’s – premier running events, you’re guaranteed to find a race that takes your fancy. And here’s hoping it will mark the start of a long and event-full running journey. It's not all about racing, of course, as proved by MR debutant Matt Buck, who embarked on a self-supported run along Portugal's stunning and appropriately named Historical Way. And of course there’s the usual blend of seasonal training advice, exclusive reviews, witty race reports and nutrition know-how – all of which, we hope, can help you make 2018 your best running year yet.
