TOUCHING THE SKY

SKYRUNNING IS BOOMING IN THE UK. BUT WHAT IS IT EXACTLY? WE WENT TO THE LAKES TO FIND OUT…

SKY RUNNING

If anyone in the briefing room wasn’t nervous, they almost definitely were now. Any ideas that the inaugural Scafell Sky Race might be a bit of a soft touch, compared to its big brother race the notorious Lakes Sky Ultra the day before, had been crushed. “Unlike yesterday’s race, entries aren’t vetted,” said Charles Sproson, director for both races, and an elite mountain runner. “But don’t be fooled. This is a very technical, challenging course.”

Often an RD might follow that up with something encouraging about toughing it out through bad spells and, you know, chin up and there’s every chance you’ll get to the end. But Charlie has a different message. “Please exercise Sound Mountain Judgement at all times. That means, if you don’t feel safe, connect with other people. If you still don’t feel safe, don’t go past the next checkpoint. Come down off the course. You need to make that decision.” Oh. And I thought skyrunning sounded like airy-fairy fun. Something Peter Pan might do.

About Men's Running

The November issue of Men’s Running is all about training smart: whether that’s tailoring your sessions to suit your body type, learning to make the most of your urban environment or discovering the most cost-effective events, this issue is packed with content to help you reach your full potential. Elsewhere, we’ve got some stunning, run-envy inducing destination races. Run-reporter Arko Hojholt travels to the pristine Swiss Alps for the Inferno Half: a half marathon with a sting in its tail. Damian Hall, meanwhile, has been kept busy: first, trying his hand (or feet) at the quad-wrecking discipling of skyrunning, before troubling the crème de la crème of ultrarunning at the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB), the world’s premier trail race. Of course, we’ve also got exclusive kit reviews, tech roundups and inspiring interviews to maintain motivation this winter.
