A round up of the latest military titles

Title: Merkava Siman 1: Merkava Mk 1 in IDF Service – Part 1 (IDF Armor Series 20)

Author: Michael Mass and Adam O’Brien

Publisher: Desert Eagle Publishing

ISBN: 978-9-65770-0-075

Price: L25.00 (pb)

The latest title from this well-respected series coincides perfectly with the release of Takom’s new kit. The Merkava Mk 1 was the first Israeli-designed MBT and remained in service with the IDF from 1979 to 2010. It first saw action in Operation ‘Peace for Galilee’ in 1982 and was armed with the 105mm gun. This book, the first volume of two planned for the Merkava Mk 1, has a brief nine-page introduction to the development of the tank before getting down to the meat of the book, over 200 inspirational photos of the vehicle itself. There then follows of fourteen pages of superbly reproduced ‘In Action’ images and eight pages of ‘general’ views before a long ‘In Detail’ walkaround. The photos show the extreme conditions that this vehicle served in, but also reveal how the effects of light can drastically alter the shade of IDF Grey that the vehicle appears to be painted in. Food for thought for modellers indeed. The boom ends with some interesting images of the tank being refuelled and undergoing routine maintenance. With all Desert Eagle publications, the standard is very high and these are book written and produced with the modeller in mind. If you plan on building the new Takom kit (or the old Tamiya one), then you’ll need this book. Even if you only a fan of modern armour in general, it is one I’d recommend graces your bookshelf. Very highly recommended. It’s available from Wendy at the Aviation Book Centre (, who kindly supplied the review copy.
