SCALE: 1/35 and 1/72
More new releases this month from ICM, which should be available by the time you read this. Not a military model as such, but U-Boat Type ‘Molch’ WWII German Midget Submarine (ref. S.019) will be of interest to many. The Molch was a single-seat midget submarine designed for operations in the coastal zone and was operated by the Kriegsmarine’s special assault forces. During development, it was designated as Thomas II, and serial production, now known as Molch, began in July 1944. The midget submarine was equipped with a single electric motor for surface and underwater operation, which limited its combat capability. The depth of immersion was up to 60 meters, and the maximum speed in the underwater position was five knots. The hull consisted of three sections, with a chair for a single crew member in the centre section. The Molch was built at the Deschhimag shipyard in Bremen, and 393 units were produced in total. K-Verbände, also known as the Small Battle Units, formed in the spring of 1944, these submarines were used in the Mediterranean and North Sea, making 140 trips to sea by the end of the war. This 1/72-scale is a completely new tooling and offers interesting possibilities for both dioramas and as a static display model. ICM have also released a Ships of the Kriegsmarine Acrylic Paint Set (ref. 3029) to complement their new mini-submarine.
