MUM-TO-MUM: THE NON-PROFITS MAKING A DIFFERENCE

THERE’S A LOT OF AMAZING WORK HAPPENING IN THE ‘MUM SECTOR’ OF THE CHARITY WORLD.

In each issue of Motherdom I’ll feature the latest projects from non-profits. I caught up with NCT, Parents1st, Cocoon Family Support and Mothers Uncovered to find out about their peer support work and how it can make all difference to mums who might otherwise slip through the net.

NCT published a report last year called “The Hidden Half”. Fifty per cent of the women they surveyed said they experienced mental health or emotional difficulties at some time during pregnancy or in the year after birth. Of those women, 42% said their difficulties were not identified by a doctor or health professional at their six-week check. Many mums find it difficult to open up about how they’re feeling to their GP, and can feel rushed at this appointment. NCT is currently doing a lot of campaigning work to get the sixweek check properly funded so that doctors have the time and resources to focus on the mum’s wellbeing as well as the baby’s. As well as their campaigning, NCT is also piloting a programme called ‘Parents in Mind’, which is a peer support programme. This basically means mum-to-mum support. A mum with previous experience of perinatal mental health issues is given training to be a peer supporter, and then gives one-to-one or group-based support to mums who are going through it right now.
