BEING A MILITARY WIFE

Penny Taylor by Natalya Chagrin

Penny is a midwife and a member of Motherdom’s Editorial Board. But in this piece she uncovers her truth about another label – being a military wife.

YOU’VE PROBABLY HEARD IT. YOU MAY EVEN HAVE SAIDIT YOURSELF TO SOMEONE. “ YOU KNEW WHAT YOU WERE GETTING INTO WHEN YOU MARRIED HIM.”

I married a British soldier; for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part. On your wedding day, that last bit doesn’t really register. You party hard at the reception, he looks ridiculously handsome in his uniform, everyone has a blast. Then he comes home from work one day and gives you that look - preceded by a sigh - that he’s being deployed to a war zone. But remember (‘you knew this when you married him’) it’s his job, it’s what he’s trained to do. You can’t help but see a little glint in his eye, that he’s just a tiny bit thrilled to go and do what he signed up for, to fight for Queen and country. You’ve been married three months, it’s ok, you’re resilient, and he’ll be home for Christmas. The Bosnia operational tour comes and goes, you write preposterously romantic letters to each other. There was no internet then, no emails, no social media. One can barely imagine it now, but we had so much to say in those letters, it was concise and considered, and from the heart.
