When the machines rock

Introducing a degree of unpredictability to proceedings can be musically inspiring. So this month, let’s make things a bit ‘random’… as Dave Gale mixes it up with modular

Randomising pitches and CVs

The Doepfer A-148 is a Dual Sample & Hold module. Just add noise as a sample input, and you’re away!

Do you ever sit down to do some writing or composing, and find that it just doesn’t happen? In my other life as a professional media composer, I occasionally think about whether the ‘well of original composition’ will run dry, and if it does, what I would do? Well, sometimes, it’s nice not to have to think about things too much and let the machines do the work instead.

The Logic System

In my teenage years, I would often find myself staring at the back of record sleeves, and as anyone of my age will tell you, there was often a very large amount of information to be found on the back of a record sleeve. One such goldmine of information was called Logic by Logic System, the alter ego of Hideki Matsu take. About MusicTech

The idea of this month’s MusicTech is to give you a flavour of what it’s like to record a band, with all the technical know-how that goes with it. We asked MT expert Mike Hillier to imagine you are sitting watching him prepare the studio and mic the band up and in doing so, Mike offers a hell of a lot of advice. Like I say, it’s like you’re with him... At the other end of the scale we have the new Pioneer Toraiz, a unit that, on the face of it, is packed with DJ appeal. Yet dig beneath the surface and you’ll find an incredibly powerful piece of hardware for the music producer. Talking of scales, we go from dance music remixing and production with Mason (p34) to mastering it with Label Worx. So we cover the complete process of recording to release which, quite handily, brings us right back to our cover feature! The November issue of MusicTech is out now!
