Warhol
This bold exhibition, the first major Warhol retrospective in the USA since 1989, brings together an unprecedented 350 pieces of the artist’s work, many for the first time. Starting at New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art last month, the show will then roll on to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, before pitching up at the Art Institute of Chicago next year. Curated by Warhol authority Donna De Salvo, this will be the biggest amassing of Warhol’s works yet, filling an 18,000sq ft gallery in the new Renzo Piano-designed downtown Whitney — the largest event the museum has hosted dedicated to one artist. But beyond the superlatives and those iconic silk screens, Andy Warhol — From A to B and Back Again aims to humanise the artist, to look past the bloodless facade and factory output to examine how the iconic portraits and prints weren’t as easily manufactured as they may seem. It’ll even screen 35 of his rarely seen films, all shown in their original 16mm format. But, of course, it’ll give patrons those coveted ‘15 minutes’. A show for the selfie-generation, one section will display 75 portraits of Muhammad Ali, Liza Minnelli and others in an Instagram-like grid. Photographs won’t just be permitted, they’re encouraged, so get that soup can selfie and tag #WarholxWhitney. SARAH BARRELL
