DRESSED IN a tennis kit of salmon and neon green—looking half like a potent cocktail, half like sunset over the Mojave Desert—Stan Wawrinka made an appropriately colorful exit from the 2016 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California. Deep into a third-set tie break, in his fourth-round match against Belgian player David Goffin, Wawrinka—who likes to load and fire risky cannon shots from the back of the court—thundered up to the net to make a smash that landed wide and long. The misjudgment would eventually lose him the match. He’s a player who relies on instinct, but even Wawrinka realized that this time he’d gone too far; he described the defeat as “a match without brains.”
