Protesters from the town that sparked nationwide demonstrations against former President Omar al-Bashir in December ride atop a train into the capital on April 23 to demand that military rulers step down. Jubilation after the army ended al-Bashir’s 30-year reign quickly turned to anger when it formed a transitional government. Chanting “Freedom, peace, justice,” the protesters rode to army headquarters, where they joined thousands of others calling for civilian rule.
