The secretive nation kicked off its first ruling-party congress in 36 years with state media lauding the isolated country’s “prestige” as a nuclear power, saying it will strengthen self-defensive nuclear weapons capability, a decision adopted in defiance of U.N. resolutions. North Korea invited numerous foreign journalists to visit during the meeting but blocked them from covering the proceedings and expelled a BBC crew for its coverage.
