If there is one issue that has got people in Oban talking over the past few weeks, it has been the change to refuse collections from every two weeks to every three weeks.
On the one hand, the council is between a rock and a hard place. With budgets cut to the bone, councillors had the difficulty of trying to find ways to make the money go further without losing key services.
But there can be no doubt that cutting bin collections to every three weeks just isn’t working. Not only is it unpopular, but as our front page story highlights this week, it is impacting on communities such as Soroba, where they seem to have too few bins to cope with the amount of rubbish being generated. Bins are full to capacity long before the bins are due to be emptied and the overspill has the potential to attract rats and seagulls. With the bins situated close to a children’s playpark, it is hardly surprising the community are upset.
