A Rebel Found God, who answered me in the day of my distress, has gone with me wherever I have gone. Genesis 35:3
JACOB runs for his life, fearing that his elder brother Esau is seeking to kill him. Esau has a legitimate grievance. When Esau was famished, Jacob tempted him to exchange his birth right, as the first-born son, for a bowl of lentil soup. Impulsively, Esau agreed and lost out on his inheritance. By impersonating Esau, Jacob also tricked his blind father into giving him the patriarchal blessing that rightfully belonged to Esau.
So the scoundrel flees from Esau. At risk from robbers and wild beasts, he sleeps in the desert with a stone for a pillow. Then a wonderful thing happens. God visits him in a dream. Jacob sees a ladder stretching from earth to heaven with angels ascending and descending on it. He hears the voice of God saying that He will be with Jacob to protect him, that He will him back home and that through Jacob and his offspring, all the families on earth will be blessed.
