L ast week more than half of council members in Argyll and Bute sat on their hands and voted against setting ‘an example by condemning hate crimes’.
The reason the vote went the way it did, Councillor Sandy Taylor explained, was the number of cases reported to police was minimal. That is no doubt true, but what about all the unreported incidents? The young people bullied at school who remain silent because they fear making things worse or because they don’t think anyone in authority will do anything about it? And what about the abuse people endure because they are disabled or of a different race or religion?
