JULY marked a poignant centenary for the Pagan family of Oban: Graeme Pagan of Neaveton, his son Gillies Pagan and grandson George Pagan – known, respectively, by their initials GHP IV, V and VI.
George Hair Pagan died leading a charge during the Battle of the Somme.

In 1914, Graeme's Uncle George, known in the family as GHP III, volunteered for active service the day after the First World War was declared. Two years later, on July 1, the Battle of the Somme began, a brutal five-month struggle of attrition on a 15-mile front which left one million dead and wounded on all sides. On July 30, 1916, while leading his Black Watch platoon against the entrenched German Army, Lieutenant George Hair Pagan was killed.
