Metal guru: unleashing your inner beast with Saskia Thode of Metal Yoga Bones. Interview by David Holzer

While it may well be a quantum leap for you or me to make a connection between heavy metal and yoga, it came perfectly naturally to metal yoga teacher and pioneer Saskia Thode.

She grew up on the German coast north of Hamburg, up near the Danish border. Her mother was heavily into metal and they went to their first festival tog ether when Thode was just 12-years-old. She then began her own journey into metal’s heart of darkness, discovering bands like German thrash metal legends Sodom.

In 2006, she moved to the USA. When she was 18, she took up yoga to help her recover from a car accident. Her back problems disappeared and, after moving to New York City aged 21, she began practicing more frequently. After she qualified as a yoga teacher, she began teaching metal yoga alongside more conventional classes including restorative and therapeutic yoga.
