Anyone who practices yoga can have no doubt about the power of the mind-body connection. Even nonyogis know that a few deep breaths can help calm us if we’re feeling stressed or in an anxious state. But did you know that just one nerve – the vagus nerve – is largely responsible for this complex symbiotic relationship?
As part of our autonomic nervous system that controls the things the body does automatically, the vagus nerve monitors information from our senses to gauge threat levels. You can think of the vagus nerve as a two-way radio communication system helping you stay in touch with your sensations and emotions: it is behind your gut instinct, the knot in your thr oat and the butterflies in your stomach.
The longest nerve of the autonomic nervous system, its name comes from the Latin meaning ‘wandering’. True to its name, the vagus nerve starts at the brain stem before meandering close to the left ear and moving down via the back of the throat to the heart, lungs and diaphragm before branching out like tree roots in the gut. It connects to all major organs from the neck down, working to regulate breathing, heart rate, muscles, digestion, circulation and even the vocal chords.
