Benefits
Shoulder Stand is known as the mother of asana and there are wide ranging claims of its powers to heal pretty much everything. Physically it dramatically alters the effects of gravity on the body, changing the pressure on your internal systems, glands and organs, stimulating and invigorating your body, and allowing your blood to flow freely back to your heart. I like to imagine the organs being massaged from the inside. Mentally, it’s a calming posture; good for stress, anxiety and anger reduction.
Common Mistakes
Be mindful not to allow your elbows to splay out wider than your shoulders. Plant your hands firmly on your back so you can straighten your spine and move your chest towards your chin, eventually creating Jalandhara Bandha (chin lock). Once in the pose keep your head still and relax your neck. Shoulder Stand is not advised for people with high blood pressure and if you have a sensitive back use a wall to assist you into and out of the posture.
