Yoga makes you feel good! One reason is because it gets you in touch with your delicious senses, those innate human abilities to experience the world in all its glory, beauty and colour. From the uptempo sound of music to the deeply relaxing touch of massage, yoga and other related wellbeing therapies cater to our senses in each and every single way.
There are many people who believe we are so much more than the five senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch).
As well as the well-known sixth sense, a kind of extra-sensory awareness, there are dozens of others chronicled through the years by sages and scientists alike. Some of these might already be familiar to seasoned yogis. Such as the notion of a muscle stretch sense; quite literally, we can feel in our body the stretching of deep muscle tissue inside, as we reach out on the mat.
It’s a fascinating topic. What we do know is that our senses collectively provide instant, moment-by-moment feedback and awareness of our current environment. And yet so many of us today are guilty of zoning out, losing this incredible power to the hustle and bustle of modern, everyday life.
