MODERN MEDITATORS ARE mindful ON-THE-MOVE
There is more to meditation than sitting still, says Buddhify app creator Rohan Gunatillake
”The reality is that not everyone has time for extended periods of daily formal practice. Thankfully there is more to meditation than just formal meditation.”
Do a Google image search for mindfulness or meditation and what you’ll see are endless images of someone sitting in what looks like a rather uncomfortable position, eyes closed, all by themselves, and most likely with some kind of rainforest or idyllic backdrop.
Since the earliest days of the mindfulness tradition, meditation has always been something that can be practiced wherever you are and whatever you’re doing. But in recent decades, it’s clear that what we as a culture understand as being meditation has been reduced to formal sitting meditation. Conventional formal meditation absolutely is a valuable style of practice, but in the timepoor society that we live in, the danger of limiting meditation solely to formal practice is that it leads to the classic excuse for not doing it: I don’t have time.
The reality is that not everyone has time for extended periods of daily formal practice.
Thankfully there is more to meditation than just formal meditation. The same techniques can be practiced alongside the activities you are already doing. You can develop body awareness when commuting, concentration when walking, and even compassion when browsing Instagram. All you need to know is the right techniques and remember to use them. And that is a much easier problem to solve than finding twenty minutes to sit still, each day, in an already packed schedule. If the core teachings of mindfulness are going to truly be useful and relevant in today’s world, they have to be malleable.
