Arguably Britain’s poshest mainstream supermarket, Waitrose has been trialling yoga at some of its stores. The company has been inviting customers to join classes at three of its shops – in Basingstoke, Newbury and at its new Banbury shop, which opened earlier this year - for a trial period.
“We know that overall wellbeing is increasingly important to our customers,” said Moira Howie, the company’s nutrition manager. “In addition to eating well they can now relax and enjoy the benefits of yoga in selected stores, while meeting new people.”
Classes suitable for all levels – from beginners to advanced yogis – cost £7 per session or £35 for six sessions and are all run by local, qualified yoga professionals.
One of the senior yoga teachers helping out is Sam Rao. “My recommendation is to eat well and move well so yoga in a supermarket could be the perfect balance,” he said. “Yoga works the whole body and is a discipline for all. Stretching and working the muscles has always been associated with releasing stress both in the body and the mind, leading to good health.”
