Simple curiosity is what led Rohan Gunatillake to his first experience with meditation. It was his last year at university and one night he heard there was a meditation class up the road. Having nothing better to do, he decided to go. And he’s glad that he did.
He describes himself as an accidental entrepreneur. He never really dreamed or planned that meditation and mindfulness would be the context for the work he did. After working in completely different fields as a technology specialist – initially with the UK government and then for arts and culture organisations – he decided to combine his professional technology, design, and innovation skills with his personal interest in meditation and mindfulness.
“The downside of working as a consultant is that you always walk away, and the end product is never yours. Having spent years helping other people make cool stuff, I reached a point where I just thought, well, I’d like to make my own thing now. I’ve helped other people make stuff, I know how to do it, and I have the network of people. It became obvious in the end,” he says.
Today, Gunatillake is one of the most original and creative voices in modern mindfulness. His unique approach to mindfulness ‘on-the-go’ has seen him create Kara (mindful ness f or peopl e affected by cancer), Sleepfulness (the app that teaches you to meditate and enjoy better sleep), and of course, the best-selling hit app buddhify.
