As with all aspects of the practice, study and teaching of the vast and varied field of yoga, there is no one answer to such important questions. Just as Patanjali’s vital teaching tasya bhumisu viniyogah YS 3:6 reminds us that yoga practice and pre-scribed yoga therapy needs to be shaped to the individual’s needs and considerations, so each individual considering a path of teaching yoga will have personal and pr actical variants that can shape their ultimate decisions in choosing a training course appropriate for themselves, their famil y, finances and their current working and life commitments.
The decision re: location of the course, at home or abroad, should be made primarily with the school and teachers in mind, along with the facilities that the location has to offer. A tropical or glorious environment can be very enticing but spending at least a month (most short-form courses have a one-month minimum period) in a place illequipped or supportive to such an intense experience can result in limitations and disappointment. Nevertheless, there is much to be said for separation from immediate communication, total immersion into the subject and its practice, and the important aspect of community and comradery in the learning and sharing which I continually witness in intensive courses both at home and abroad.
