I can still remember the suit that my old physics teacher Mr Bailey wor e: a silvery gr ey, with a bl ue and sil ver striped tie. His voice was distinct and his salt and pepper hair al ways a bit long and unwashed. I refer to the content of those school physics classes in my yoga lectures on resonance, eddy currents (when teaching on nadis) and purification of the pancha koshas (five bodies). In comparison, I can’t remember most of the other teachers’ names, let alone their clothes, voice, or class content. What made Mr Bailey’s classes so lasting, so transformative, so influential? Passion. Genuine, over-flowing passion. It’s catching!
As a yoga teacher, finding out what drives your passion is at the heart of making sure you never work another day in your life. When you teach your passion, you are simply sharing yoursel f; you would do it for fr ee! Your ener gy flows, you find that you have more focus, more fun and it’s easier to spend time ‘working’ as it feels like a pleasure. When you teach from your essence, you will not get bored and will never stop learning or exploring, and al though it may be tiring, it will never be draining.
Figuring out what your passion is means finding out about yourself
It is something you feel strongly about: when you talk about it, you can feel your feelings rise. When I teach on a subject I am passionate about, I start speaking more quickl y, become more animated and time flies, although the look of puzzlement in those who find the Scottish accent tricky usually slows me down pretty quickly!
