Transitioning from enthusiastic yoga student to becoming the yoga teacher that you want to be is exciting. You’re feeling ready to go deeper into all aspects of yoga and want to share the positive experiences you’ve come to know and love thr ough your own pr actice. Teacher training beckons, but what skills do you need to become a yoga educator?
“There are a lot of trainings to choose from and a considerable amount of time and money to invest, “ says Beverley Nol an of Barefoot Body Training. “So, it’s super important to know what sort of teacher you want to be, who you think you might be teaching, and then to go through a matching process to make sure you get the skills you need to get started.”
Begin by reflecting on what you consider to be the professional scope of a yoga teacher. This may or may not include being a movement and exercise pr ofessional; a proponent of a particular method or style; a respectful link in the historical and philosophical narr atives of yoga; a facil itator of personal spiritual enquiry. As you draw up this kind of teacher profile, you’ll start to identify the skills and knowledge that are essential from your training. A wellrounded course is going to provide practical anatomy and physiology; thoughtful approaches to sequencing asanas as well as the knowledge to adapt or modify asanas for common health conditions and injuries; contex tual history and philosophy; effective communication skill sand teaching methodologies; as well as professional ethics and useful business practices. The challenge is to drill down into a syllabus and find out what exactly is going to be covered, how it will be delivered, and how it will be assessed.
